We are excited to announce our new Introductory Piano Teachers' Course, designed for new piano teachers and structured towards gaining a level 4 teaching diploma such as the ARSM.

If any of the following apply to you we would love you to consider our course so we we can help you make the best possible start as you develop or grow your piano teaching studio.

Are you

  • New to piano teaching and looking for help to get established?

  • Returning to piano teaching after a break?

  • Hoping to take an ARSM teaching diploma or equivalent level 4 diploma and looking for the right course to prepare you for this?

At the PTC UK our expertise is in designing courses specifically for piano teachers. We have been training and equipping teachers since 2007 including running programmes for those preparing for teaching diplomas.

The newly created Introductory Piano Teachers' Course will enable you to make a confident and professional start and equip you with an excellent toolkit going forward. In addition to deepening and extending your teaching and pianism, we will help prepare you for any UK level 4 teaching diploma if you choose to undertake one at the end of your studies.  We have an exceptional team of Principal Tutors and guest lecturers, and in addition to course days spread over six months, you will have access to a personal tutor for the duration of the course.

We are confident that our course offers unique and exceptional value for money and there is no other course designed solely for Piano Teachers.

How the course is structured

The Introductory Piano Teachers' Course takes place over six months - from January to June. Course days are a flexible, hybrid combination of residential sessions and on-line study days with additional individual tutorial time between students and the course tutor for online-only students.Residential days normally take place during UK school holidays, although it should be noted not all UK regions have the same holidays. The timetable varies from year to year but normally follows a similar pattern.

If applying as an online participant, all dates below can be attended virtually or you may watch recordings of the sessions later on. If applying to attend in person with single days online, please note that residential days take place at The Purcell School of Music in Bushey.  Click here for more information.

Minimum Requirements

In order to take this course, you need:

  • to be aged 18 or over.

  • to have achieved grade 6 piano or above with a recognised UK exam board or an equivalent overseas institution.

  • to be teaching a minimum of 2 pupils on a regular basis.

We recommend all students take piano lessons (online or face-to-face) from a teacher who is experienced in preparing students for performance diplomas. All PTC Tutors can offer such lessons, as required.

Course Content
The Introductory Piano Teachers' Course is holistic in its approach and will be delivered in four modules.  In every module there will be assessed assignments.

Module 1: Starting to teach the piano
In this module you will be asked to write a reflection on two lesson observations given by different teachers and present one area of special interest from the module.

Module 2: Beyond the basics
You will be required to evaluate two tutor books and/or create an original resource for beginner lessons. You will also be asked to
produce a video of a 30-minute lesson with supporting documents and reflection.

Module 3: Deepening your musicianship and pianistic skills
You will participate in a Technical Challenge (scales, arpeggios and cadences) and perform a Late Intermediate/Early Advanced piece from the PTC repertoire list.

Module 4: Becoming professional
In this module you will produce a written statement of personal values and teaching philosophy and written studio contracts and payment policies
