The Workshops
Saturday 25th October
9:45 am Andrew Davidson - Improvisation for Piano Pedagogy (in person attendance only)

Improvisation can enrich any pianist’s musicianship and creativity. In this two-part workshop, you’ll explore practical, accessible ways to bring improvisation into your teaching, whatever your own experience level. We’ll begin with rhythm and movement - using physical action and spoken word to explore beat, metre, and note durations, building towards motifs, phrases, and forms. We’ll then apply these rhythmic concepts at the piano through pentatonic, modal, diatonic, and atonal structures. Discover how simple, adaptable tools can spark creativity, deepen understanding of repertoire, and expand expressive skills. Explore fresh strategies to inspire learners, from beginners to advanced, while broadening your own musical palette.

Join Roberta for a practical and thought-provoking workshop exploring the dynamic cycle between teacher identity, metacognitive modelling, and student motivation. You’ll consider how your perspectives and values show up - often tacitly - in lessons, and learn strategies to enhance student motivation, growth and belonging through intentional modelling. There will also be space for bold critique of common tensions, from imposter syndrome to conflicting goals and contrasting teaching approaches. You'll leave with fresh approaches, renewed clarity, and a stronger sense of agency in values-led teaching, grounded in your professional identity.
