Stories from our Alumni

Every now and then, we receive a wonderful story from one of our alumni which reiterates the worth of the work we do.

In this month’s blog, we wanted to share with you a couple of the inspirational stories that we’ve received from some of our piano teacher after they’ve graduated from The Piano Teachers’ Course UK.

Catherine

“I did the Piano Teachers’ Course nearly 10 years ago and it was a turning point in my life. When I started it I didn’t really know what I wanted to do – I knew I enjoyed piano teaching but I couldn’t see how I could make that my career. By the time I finished, I was not only convinced that piano teaching and training other piano teachers my dream job, but I also had the confidence that I could do it! The PTC taught me so much and gave me a confidence in my teaching that I didn’t previously have. It helped me clarify my teaching philosophy and articulate why I believe the job we do is so important! It also showed me that I wasn’t on my own but part of a community of other like-minded teachers. The tutors were so inspiring and supportive, and I made significant relationships that continue to this day.

Today, I am the Founder and Director of The Piano School in Coventry, lecture to undergrad students on Instrumental Teaching and Pedagogy, and am the Director of Assessment for the CME, delivered by the PTC. My dream job of teaching piano and training other piano teachers has become my reality! I wouldn’t be doing what I’m doing now if I hadn’t done the PTC – I can’t recommend it highly enough.”

Claire

“I had considered taking the PTC for a few years but always found a reason to put it off, the main one being that as I am blind, it would be a huge ordeal for me to travel from Northern Ireland for the course as well as getting around the venue and meeting new people. In 2017 I took the plunge and contacted the course administrator who immediately put me at ease and before I knew it, I had signed up to begin that September and couldn’t wait.

I had been teaching piano for a few years and, like many others in the field, felt like a bit of a fraud as I hadn’t received much in the way of formal training.  My confidence has grown greatly since completing the course and I learnt so many ideas that I can share with my own students.

Everything on the course was so relevant and worthwhile.  I even enjoyed doing the assignments and all the reading involved.  I just couldn’t get enough.  I was most concerned about the performance element of the course as I am extremely nervous performer, however this was one area which I found extremely beneficial  for my teaching, as well as personal performing.

All of the tutors were so friendly, approachable, enthusiastic and knowledgeable.

The residential element of the course was fantastic as I had nothing but piano and piano teaching to think of during this time.

It was also really interesting to meet and form friendships with many other piano teachers and learn from and share ideas with them.

I am so glad I completed the PTC and would highly recommend it to anyone.”

I love reading the success of PTC students…. as a new student on the course myself this year, it reinforces the fact I have made the best decision!
