Module A:  Practical Piano Teaching

Reflection on the First Weekend – 1,250 words

An essay reflecting on; the ideas presented in the first PTC weekend and the Guiding Principles, in relation to their own teaching. For students to consider and digest course ideas, and prioritise their aims for the course.

Lesson Observation and Reflection Assignment

Students to observe and reflect on three lessons given by PTC tutors

Essay Assignment – 3,000 words

Students to select a title from 5 options to explore current thinking and develop their own teaching in the relevant area.

Teaching Assignment – 3,500 words and 2 videos

Students undertake a full Case Study with a chosen pupil, putting the PTC Guiding Principles and course ideas into practice, and reflecting on and evaluating the teaching process, with the help of a Teaching Diary*.

Professional Portfolio Assignment

Students compile a Professional Teaching Portfolio to include a specified list of documents.

*Teaching and Practice Diaries: Students are required to keep a note book to hand to jot down plans, thoughts and observations as they teach and practice, to help support their Assignments.

Module B:  Pianism and the Piano Teacher 

Grade 1-3 Performance Assignment

Students to prepare a Grade 1-3 piece for performance. A brief record of the preparation process in the Practice Diary*, an introduction and analysis of the piece, and the experience of a live performance will provide valuable preparation for the Grade 6-8 Performance Assignment.

Grade 6-8 Performance Assignment

200 word programme notes, a 2,500 word analysis and a 700 word post performance reflection

Students spend 9-10 weeks preparing a Grade 6–8 piece of 2-3 minutes in length – to perform on the final course day. Supported by programme notes, an analysis – including comparison of two recordings by different artists – and a final post performance reflection.

      The PTC written assignments are now accepted as a substitute for the entire Written Submisson required for the Teaching DipABRSM. This applies to all Cert PTC and PTC CME graduates from PTC 2013-14 onwards.
