History of the Relationship between The PTC UK and EPTA UK

The PTC UK had its origins in the EPTA UK Pedagogy Course which began in the 1990’s. This was a part time-course, held in London and taking place on Sundays between January and May each year. Notable former Directors include Dr Patricia Powell, Penelope Roskell and Heli Ignatius-Fleet. In 2007 Lucinda Mackworth-Young was appointed Director. At the same time, William Fong, Head of Keyboard at The Purcell School offered the school as the course venue. This opened up many possibilities: residential weekends throughout the year, use of a vast fleet of Steinway and Fazioli pianos, and expertise from The Purcell School Tutors. It also came with separate administration. All of these elements combined to mark the beginning of The PTC UK in its current form.

Now running independently of each other, The PTC UK and EPTA UK continue to have a mutually supportive relationship. The PTC UK Tutors are highly valued and respected EPTA UK members who teach in line with EPTA UK’s mission statement and abide by the EPTA UK Code of Conduct. The EPTA UK Management Committee continues to take an interest in The PTC UK’s continuing development within the UK and Overseas.

EPTA UK – The European Piano Teachers Association UK Ltd – was founded in 1978 by Carola Grindea, who also founded the Europe-wide co-ordinating body, EPTA. It now has Associations in almost every European country, and an International Conference of all EPTA Associations is held in a different country each year.

The aims of EPTA UK are to promote excellence in piano teaching and performance, to bring teachers and performers together and to raise standards within the profession.

EPTA UK members should adopt the highest standards of professional integrity in all their contacts with students, pupils, parents, colleagues and other professionals, at all times and in all places.
